IT learning takes a new curve at the MCC
Centre of Excellence
Rural youth from Seenigama
and surrounding areas can now take their IT
skills to new heights with free classes in web
design, CAD and graphic design at the MCC Centre
of Excellence’s computer training centre.
The computer training centre features ten
specially configured computers believed to be
the only ones of their type in Sri Lanka,
donated by Foundation of Goodness (FoG)
supporter Ranjan De Costa to enable
disadvantaged young people in the area to gain
skills in the burgeoning IT sector.
Thanks to the high capacity of these
computers, FoG is now able to offer
training in advanced level design and
development programs through a six month
course focusing on internet, email, web
background, HTML, DreamWeaver and
Fireworks, Adobe Photoshop and CorelDraw
– a rare chance for students to enhance
their abilities in these areas.
FoG Founder and Trustee Kushil Gunasekera said
that the new computer classes had the potential
to be life changing for graduates.
‘The MCC Centre of Excellence aims to give the
people in this area the chance to fulfill their
potential through education and skills
training,’ Mr Gunasekera said.
‘These computer classes are exceptionally
high level for a rural setting, and the youth
who complete the courses will have an amazing
advantage when it comes to looking for
employment.
‘We are very proud to be able to offer them this
opportunity, and all credit must be given to Mr
Ranjan de Costa for delivering such high quality
computers with his exceptional kindness and
generosity,’ he said.
The Foundation of Goodness (FoG) has facilitated
computer classes in the state of the art
training centre since the MCC Centre of
Excellence’s soft opening in July this year,
with students undertaking courses ranging from
basic Microsoft Office skills to more advanced
computer science programs.
The web design course commenced on 8th
of September and is conducted on a
weekly basis by a highly qualified
training instructor and computer
programming and web designing lecturer
Mr K Raveendra from Hikkaduwa.
Twenty students
attended the first day of classes and numbers
are expected to expand as demand for all the
courses is high.
Mr Gunasekera said that FoG is delighted to
witness youth in the area taking on the
challenge to improve their skills and abilities,
and elevate their chance to find work that is on
par with more privileged city students.
‘Praise must be given to the Marylebone Cricket
Club for sponsoring the Centre of Excellence and
making opportunities like this computer course
possible for local youth.
‘The enthusiasm shown by the young
individuals is a great achievement not
only for the villagers of this community
but also the Foundation of Goodness,
whose focus has been to bring new hope
and meaning to Seenigama,’ he said.
