WHAT WE DO

What we do

The Foundation of Goodness (FoG) is committed to the wellbeing of the Seenigama region and supports local communities through a range of projects across areas including children’s needs, education and training, healthcare and psycho-social support, housing, livelihoods, sport and the environment.

Donors and volunteers from across the globe support FoG in carrying out countless activities to uplift the lives of rural residents, many of whom suffered devastating losses in the 2004 tsunami.

The majority of these activities are co-ordinated at the MCC Centre of Excellence, a central hub developed on the grounds of Founder Kushil Gunasekera’s ancestral villa in Seenigama. FoG also has an office in Colombo.

Current major projects

The MCC Centre of Excellence opened on 14th June 2007 as the centre point for many of FoG’s empowerment projects. It comprises of a medical centre, women’s enterprise division, environment project management office, business skills development centre, modern computer lab, pre-school, handicraft boutique, the Re-building Lives Programme, English training school, MCC gallery, tsunami gallery, administration office and accommodation for volunteers, donors and trainers.

The Sports Academy will be a major sports venue for FoG’s sports programs and for international and national sports tours. It includes a world class cricket pitch called The Seenigama Oval (sponsored by the Surrey County Cricket Club-UK), the 25 metre Bryan Adams Swimming Pool Complex, a kiddies pool and playground, an indoor sports centre with volleyball, netball and badminton courts, indoor cricket nets, a gymnasium, club house, and an accommodation centre. The Sports Academy is in operation, and it is hoped the indoor sports centre will be underway soon.

The Victoria Gardens housing park features 84 double storey duplex homes with modern amenities. The project is sponsored by the Victorian State Government for Seenigama families who were forced to relocate due to the 100m buffer zone imposed post-tsunami. It is scheduled for completion in December 2007.

The Udumulla Activity & Learning Centre is a community centre constructed by FoG and donors Village-to-Village UK to provide greater opportunities for rural children and youth. The first of FoG’s ‘Village Heartbeat Project’, the centre has an English training school, skills development programs, a Children’s Goodness Club, a library, and a volunteer cottage for local and foreign volunteers who are willing to share their expertise and help develop the village.
