HEALTH CARE

Our goal is to provide medical care and health education services to the rural community,
thus empowering villagers regarding their own health and wellbeing.

THE RAINBOW CLINIC

In February 2005, US pediatricians Jugta Kahai and Deepa Bhojwani; Charles McWells, a water and wastewater management supervisor; and Tai Kulenic, a licensed art psychotherapist set up a comprehensive Paediatric Clinic called the "Rainbow Clinic" in Seenigama (pictured above centre). The rooms were cleaned, painted and furnished with help from New Zealand's Operation Phoenix team of builders.

When the doors of the Rainbow Clinic opened on February 16th, the response was overwhelming. Jugta and Deepa treated children for various complaints. Tsunami-related wounds were still evident. In addition, the clinic provided a referral source for children who would benefit from art psychotherapy.

The immediate goal was to provide the children of Seenigama and its surrounding villages with Paediatric medical services. Long-term plans include ensuring sustainability and an improvement of the level of care with an emphasis on holistic healing by combining medical and psychological services at the same location.

The clinic has flourished since the US doctors returned home and now treats all villagers in the community, not only children. At present, the Rainbow Clinic provides free 'general practice' style consultation and healthcare to visitors from Seenigama and eight surrounding villages. Clinics take place six days a week, between 10 am and 4 pm. The clinic currently caters for approximately 200 non-paying patients every week. Consultations and medicines are dispensed free of charge and there is no limit to the number of times patients may visit. The clinic has a consulting area, examining and wound dressing room, drug storage room, dispensing room and a bathroom.

If a patient cannot be managed locally by the clinic staff they are referred to a Government Hospital with a referral letter. The Foundation of Goodness pays a percentage of each patient's treatment and/or surgery, usually up to the value of Rs. 20,000 (this figure is reviewed on a case-by-case basis). Although the patient is referred, they must still queue to be seen by the hospital staff - referral does not guarantee an appointment.

The Rainbow Clinic in Seenigama is currently under the patronage of the College of Paediatrics, University of Colombo.
