Foundation of Goodness History

Before this disaster struck, the need to assist the less fortunate people of Seenigama was recognized by the Foundation of Goodness. The Foundation is committed to improving the lives of people in desperate circumstances and empowering the rural community with enhanced facilities.

The Foundation of Goodness has been active in the Seenigama village for over five years.

It's activities have included:

  • Ongoing English classes
  • Computer Classes
  • Donating essential school items to needy children
  • Upgrading villages dwellings to better standard
  • The modernization of 10 Schools in conjunction with USAID
  • Wesak lantern competition
  • Community welfare programs
  • Self employment opportunities
  • Health care and nutrition (Maternity Clinics)
  • Sports activities
  • Fostering Foundation volunteers - Teenagers & Youth

Over the last five years the Foundation has spent over Rs15 million (US$ 150,000) sourced from individual donations. All donations go directly to projects and Mr Kushil Gunasekera, the founder of the Foundation, covers all monthly administration costs. Monthly newsletters account for all project costs and donations, the newsletters are put on the website and disseminated to all donors each month.

The Foundation was previously run through the ‘Lahiru Community Centre' which was attached to Kushil's holiday bungalow in Seenigama. The documentation and project management systems of the Foundation are extremely thorough. The Foundation has 3 full time staff members who are all members of the Seenigama community.

Unfortunately both Kushil's holiday home and the ‘Lahiru Community Centre' were devastated in the Boxing Day tsunami. These have now been entirely converted into a Relief Centre Secretariat. The compound will also be used in the future for training and learning activities, in time becoming a Centre of Excellence in community development.

The spirit of the Foundation continues. Kushil, the Foundation staff and volunteers have already been working together for disaster relief and planning for the longer term re-building of the village. The Foundation has enormous good will in the village and the people of Seenigama are looking to the Foundation to help them re-build their lives.
